Recently, the group of research led by Claus Desler at UCPH had the privilege of welcoming Latvia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Hosam Abu Meri, as part of his inspirational tour of Denmark’s healthcare system. He was accompanied by the Latvian Ambassador to Denmark and SUND’s Dean, Bente Stallknecht.
The group Dr. Abu Meri visited Associate Professor Claus Desler, Associate Professor at UCPH and project coordinator of POINT, in order to learn about their pioneering research on aging and the mechanisms behind age-related diseases. The study focus on conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, aiming to understand and delay these issues to improve quality of life and reduce healthcare costs in aging populations.
The visit also highlighted the POINT project, which was presented in details, with a focus on how the project uses patient data from Denmark and Estonia to analyze health patterns post-COVID-19, aiming to uncover biomarkers for chronic disease development in organs affected by infection. “Cracking the code on how these diseases arise has the potential to fundamentally change the way we organize the last part of life, as it will give many elderly people a completely different quality of life” noted C. Desler.
Dr. Abu Meri’s visit also opened discussions about a future collaboration between Desler Group and Latvian research institutions. Under the EU’s WIDERA program, aimed at enhancing research networks in Eastern Europe, both sides envision new opportunities for sharing knowledge, infrastructure, and talent.
This promising visit exchange marks a significant step towards POINT promotion across borders and towards stronger partnerships and shared scientific progress in Europe.
